Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment, is a procedure that is performed when a tooth is infected or significantly decayed. Endodontic treatment is a method that saves the tooth by eliminating many of the problems that would otherwise result in tooth extraction. Endodontic treatment is an important process for the tooth and is easily applied to the tooth. In this article, we have compiled the details you need to know about endodontics.
What is Endodontic Treatment and Why is it Done?
Endodontic treatment is a method that deals with the treatment of the soft tissue that extends from the blood vessels that provide nutrition and sensitivity to the teeth, con-nective tissue cells, and nerve endings – that is, the pulp. Endodontic treatment is also known as canal treatment. Treatments in this area are applied in cases such as infected dental pulp, inflammation, decay, fracture or cracking. The main goal of endodontic treatment is to treat the infected tooth or nerve and preserve and restore the tooth’s full functionality.
When is Endodontic Treatment Needed?
You may need endodontic or canal treatment in the following cases:
• Change in tooth color
• Long-term sensitivity to hot or cold
• Random onset of pain
• Difficulty chewing comfortably
• Pain while chewing
What Does Endodontic Treatment Do?
Damage may occur in the nerves passing through the tooth pulp. In such a case, endo-dontic treatment is required, otherwise pulp death may occur. In endodontic treatment, damage caused by factors such as tooth fracture, decay, infection, or trauma is treated. Canal treatment or regeneration treatments can be applied in such cases. In regenera-tion treatment, live tissue is created inside the tooth root. The aim of endodontic treat-ment is to preserve the natural tooth in the mouth.
How is Endodontic Treatment Performed?
In endodontic treatment, the pulp tissue that has become inflamed or infected by vari-ous causes is removed and the canal space is cleaned. Then, the pulp is shaped and fil-led with canal filling materials that are good for the tissue. Before the endodontic pro-cedure, an X-ray is taken to see the anatomy of the tooth to be treated. This allows for the application of proper endodontic treatment. After endodontic treatment, root canal cleaning is performed to prevent the spread of bacteria and harmful organisms. Finally, the root canals are filled with filling materials and re-examined with an X-ray.
How Long Does Endodontic Treatment Take?
The duration of endodontic treatment varies depending on the following conditions:
• Location of the tooth
• Number of canals in the tooth
• Severity of the infection.
If there is no cyst formation or infection in the pulp, it can be completed in one session. Usually, since teeth are infected, treatment takes 2 sessions. A single session of endo-dontic treatment can take up to 45 minutes. In the first session, the tooth canal needs to be cleaned and shaped very well. In the other session, if there is no sensitivity in the patient’s tooth, treatment is completed by filling.
What Precautions Should Be Taken After Endodontic Treatment?
Endodontic treatment usually does not end in one session. Therefore, until the treat-ment is completed, the damaged tooth should be used as little as possible. It is impor-tant to reduce the consumption of extreme cold and hot to prevent sensitivity. After endodontic treatment is completed, no food or drink should be consumed for the first two hours. Even if the treatment is completely finished, tooth sensitivity may occur for a few days. To avoid such a situation, it is necessary to stay away from extreme cold and hot food and drinks for a few days.
The most important point to pay attention to after.
